Chapter 15

Cara had dreamt of Scathach again. In fact, she'd had the same recurring dream for the last week. She had been following her down into the lower sections of the castle, all the while Scathach had been telling her to warn them. However, every time Cara woke, she was unsure of exactly who she was supposed to warn and what she was supposed to warn them about. It was all very vague in her mind and she couldn't understand what the dream was telling her.

William was off again, trying to find Michael Craig who had been eluding him since Colin's death and it made just about everyone suspicious of him, like maybe he was the one who'd murdered Colin. Cara didn't think that was the case. From everything she'd heard about the three of them — because where Michael and Colin went, Jamie generally went as well — they were as close as brothers, and while they bickered like brothers, none of them would harm each other; other people sure, they definitely did that, but they always covered for each other. She didn't see them turning on one another, unless … maybe something came between them? But what? A woman?

That didn't seem right. They didn't seem to have a problem sharing, not if what Colin had said to her in the pub had been accurate. Cara shuddered at the thought. So, money? That was a possibility, but William had said that Jamie was devastated by Colin's death and didn't seem to have any idea of where Michael was and still defended him with passion when William questioned him. So, if it had to do with money, Jamie wasn't aware of it.

"What does that leave?" Cara murmured as she cleaned the cottage. Revenge? But what could Colin have done to cause Michael to seek revenge? Cara just didn't know enough about them to determine the answer to that. But she really didn't think that fit either. Michael probably hadn't killed Colin and was just somewhere drowning himself in alcohol over the loss of his friend. Unless he was dead too? No, surely, they'd have found him alongside Colin if he were dead too.

Cara swept the floor, pushing everything out the door, then cleaned the windows and all the furniture. She took the blankets she slept on and went outside, putting them on the ground next to the wash tub. After filling it with the water she'd warmed over the fire, she dunked one of the blankets in and used the soapwort and marjoram to scrub it clean. She wrung it out and hung it up on the clothing line she'd strung between two of the poles William used for his laundering.

It took her a few hours to get everything washed and hung, but the first blanket was almost nearly dry by the time she'd finished. She hoped the rest would be dry by the time it was time to make her pallet for the night. If it wasn't, she'd be sleeping a lot less comfortably.
